After completing primary school, he continued his education at Saint Patrick High School in
Halifax and the III LO in Gdynia. He earned his master’s degree at the newly established
inter-faculty programme in Environmental Protection at UG, after which he began doctoral
studies at the PAS Institute of Oceanology in Sopot. He obtained his PhD degree (1999) and
his postdoctoral degree (2005) at the Faculty of Chemistry of UG. In 2010, he was awarded
the title of professor.
Since 2006, he has been the Head of the Department of Environmental Analysis. He was
Vice-Dean and then Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry UG. In 2011-2012, he was the
organiser and first director of the Institute of Environmental Protection and Human Health of
UG. From 2016 to 2020, he served as Vice-Rector for Research and International
Cooperation at UG. He was also appointed as the first director of the Daniel Fahrenheit
Association of Universities in Gdansk.
On 23rd of November 2020, he was elected the Rector of the University of Gdańsk for the
term 2020/2024 and was subsequently re-elected for another term in 2024.
He has held several long-term research internships, including ones at the University of Lund,
the Marine Research Centre in La Spezia, and the University of Bremen. He was a
participant in the polar scientific expedition of the PAS Institute of Oceanology on board the
r/v Oceania.
His research interests include the mechanisms of dispersion and chemical transformations
of environmental pollutants and methods for their analysis, as well as the toxicological
evaluation of their effects.
He has served as Vice-Chair of the Committee of Analytical Chemistry of the Polish
Academy of Sciences since 2015 and has been Vice-President of the Division Green
Chemistry of EuCheMS since 2016.
He is a member of the Award Panel of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the
Comprehensive Assessment Panel and the Doctoral School Panel, as well as the Polish
Chemical Society, the Marine Chemistry Section of the Marine Research Committee of the
Polish Academy of Sciences, the Gdańsk Scientific Society, the Kashubian Institute, and the
Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
In June 2024, Prof Piotr Stepnowski has been elected the President of the Conference of
Rectors of Polish Universities.
