Kilian heads the Anticipation team at armasuisse Science & Technology within the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). His role focuses on technology anticipation and foresight, technology management, interdisciplinary research coordination, and building strategic links between academia, industry, and DDPS stakeholders. He also advises decision-makers on emerging technologies and their potential implications for defence and security.
In the field of quantum technologies, Kilian coordinates quantum technology activities across armasuisse Science & Technology, supporting the identification, assessment, and development of quantum-related capabilities, research activities, and partnerships. He is also involved in several NATO quantum technology activities, including the Transatlantic Quantum Community (TQC), which brings together experts from Allied governments, industry, and academia to advance the application of quantum technologies for defence, as well as a NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) panel focused on quantum imaging.
Kilian’s academic background spans Switzerland, Germany, and the UK. He holds two BSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering, a PhD from Imperial College London, and an Executive MBA from HEC Lausanne. He spent more than 18 years at Empa in research and leadership positions, including founding the Intelligent Manufacturing Research Group. His work focused on dynamic processes, in-situ sensing, and artificial intelligence. He has authored around 100 scientific publications and has taught at universities and PhD schools, including EPFL.
Kilian is passionate about disruptive and emerging technologies and their potential to strengthen Switzerland’s resilience and defence. He is particularly interested in technologies that can create value not only for the armed forces but also for civil society, contributing to Switzerland’s broader security, technological sovereignty, and resilience.
